Advantages:
Great logging of chat conversations, good URLs' logging, can be used for remote monitoring.
Drawbacks:
No parental control functions, bad file activity monitoring.
Summary:
Greatly hidden software with good interface and lots of functions. However the misbalance in its features doesn't allow us to recommend it to any specific type of monitoring. That is why we recommend our users studying its functions in order to understand if the software will or will not satisfy their needs. As for the easiness-to-use the software doesn't require any special skills or knowledge to be used, thus is recommended for all the types of users.
Installation & interface
Here are the screens you will need to pass through during the installation of SoftActivity Keylogger: Welcome → EULA → Installation type (Full or Viewer only) → Create Password → Setup Logging Options → Ready to install → Finish
The most interesting of them is the "Setup Logging Options" one where you can check up to 3 boxes thus configuring SoftActivity Keylogger to monitor user's activity, make screenshots and warn him about the fact he is being monitored.
The interface of the Configuration and Log Viewing parts of SoftActivity Keylogger is fundamentally different. The Configuration part has a window vertically divided into two sections — the left one contains the name of the groups all the customization options are grouped into, the right one — options themselves. Smart and easy to use. The Log Viewing part has a ribbon interface, the one that is used in Microsoft Office 2008 and later. The information is also grouped into categories, however using of ribbon interface in keyloggers looks a bit unusual. Luckily, SoftActivity Keylogger has a separate viewer for screenshots that is very comfortable to use, so as the Configuration one.
Interface of Configuration Screen
OS support
According to the website of SoftActivity Keylogger it supports Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista and Windows XP. During our testing of this keylogger on Windows 7 and Windows XP no glitches were found in its work. 72 of 97 points.
Security
SoftActivity Keylogger can be accessed by either pressing a combination of hotkeys or typing a keyword. The keylogger is also hidden greatly and is password-protected. Additionally, its user can set whether to show the warning message or not and its text. What he can't configure is the date of SoftActivity Keylogger's auto-removal.
So, 100 of 125 points in this section.
Monitoring
The results of SoftActivity Keylogger in this section are somewhere in the middle. It logs the typewriter keys pressed, but not the system keys (though in the log file you will see the formatted version of the text typed). It logs files' opening and copying, but doesn't log their creating, removal and renaming. It logs system log on/off time, but not its inactivity time. The situation is, however, different with screenshots. SoftAcitivity Keylogger allows its user to set a period of time for screenshot-making, their quality and choose between full screen and active window screenshots. Unfortunately, what user cannot do is to set the keylogger to make screenshot every time the mouse button is clicked. 165 of 300 points.
Online monitoring
In contrast to the results of SoftActivity Keylogger in previous section this one is almost perfect. The software logs URLs visited in all the browsers in our testing, except Safari, logs both incoming and outgoing emails and both sides of chat conversations in all the chats in our testing including Skype! In total it gets 166 of 176 points in this section.
Reports
One more section for SoftActivity Keylogger where it shows middle results. Log-files can be remotely sent via email and LAN, but not using FTP or flash drive. User can specify the users to monitor, but cannot configure the keylogger to monitor only some of the applications. Maximum log-files' size can be configured, while their auto-clear cannot
However, the rest of the functions in this section: "Events Duration" and "Several Days Report Building" are implemented. We would also like to say that the last of these two is very nicely done. User not only can set a custom period of dates to view the logs for, but also choose among the following dates: "All dates", "Today", "Yesterday", "This week", "Last 7 days", "Last 14 days" and "This month" — very convenient.
For the entire section — 97 of 150 points.
Other
In this section SoftActivity Keylogger goes flop — none of the functions are implemented. No parental control functions, no interface's translation, no reaction to a pre-specified keywords list, no work on schedule. 0 out of 66 points.
The bottom line
SoftActivity Keylogger by Deep Software Inc. is greatly hidden keylogger with good interface and lots of functions. However, the misbalance in its features doesn't allow us to recommend it to any specific type of monitoring. That is why we recommend our users studying its functions in order to understand if the keylogger will or will not satisfy their needs. As for the easiness of use, SoftActivity Keylogger doesn't require any special skills or knowledge to be used, thus is recommended for all the types of users.
